You haven't. To those who believe that ignorance truly is bliss - don't worry. Most of us are in a constant state of bliss anyway. Harsh words? Perhaps. But as Jamie Foxx has so insightfully said, "what we all need is a good old-fashioned ass-whuppin'." He meant the kind you got as a kid when you did something so shockingly stupid, your parents had no choice but to physically beat your butt! And after it was administered, you never did feel anger towards your parents. You only felt mixed emotions of shame and relief.

Today I had to listen to a phone call made by a 9-1-1 calltaker. The calltaker phoned the residence to check the welfare of a citizen's coworker. But instead of an adult answering, a 5 year old child answered the phone. She was hard to understand at first. But she answered every question asked of her.

What's your name?
Annie. (changed of course)
Where's your mom Annie?
Sleeping, I can't wake her.
Is anyone else home?
My dad, he's sleeping too. Mommy got hurted.
What happened?
She by the bed and she bleeding. I can't wake her up.
Do you have any brothers or sisters in the house?
I have brother but he other place.
Can you wake your daddy?
I can't wake him up. He bleeding everywhere and gun by his leg but I not allowed to touch it.

Annie has been alone with her dead parents for possibly 2 days. Being only 5 years old she believes her parents have been asleep this entire time. She wasn't scared so much as she was hungry and confused. She understood that crying wasn't going to help her. She spent the entire morning doing that and no one came to help her then.

Annie asks the calltaker, "Can I have some ice cream?"
Ice cream? Well Annie I can't promise you that but we'll work on it okay?
"Okay," Annie answers dejectedly.
Annie, can you tell me what happened?
Mommy got hurted. She got blood in her mouth. Daddy sitting down and he bleeding. I heard noise but quiet now.

The calltaker, filled with compassion for this abandoned and hungry child, continues to talk to her as help is dispatched. She tries to get the little girl to open the door but she doesn't have the dexterity or the strength to turn the dead-lock bolt. She doesn't give up until she is asked to step away from the door.

Her parents had gotten into a violent argument while she slept. Dad shot the mom and then turned the gun on himself. He did not think of his daughter when he did what he did. She woke to a different world. She hadn't yet learned how to dial a phone but she knew how to answer one.

As I sit and post this blog, I have another site pulled up on a separate tab. It tells me how we lost habeas corpus today. It tells me that I am continuing to lose my liberties because my government is exactly like that little girl's father.

In a fit of anger, this child's father killed her mother. A woman, I can only presume, he once loved. And he murdered her. Violently. And as their child slept in the other room he did not think of her as he pointed the barrel of the gun at himself. He had responsibilities still. But things like ideals would not stand in his way. Not tonight. He could only see his own rage and shame. And instead of answering for his heinous mistakes, instead of ensuring that his child would still have a future, instead of having any sense of responsibility whatsoever - he abandoned her. Completely and forever.

You might think my story is extreme in the parallels I have drawn. I think it is not extreme enough. We are all Annie. We know enough to get by and how to answer a ringing phone. But we do not know enough to truly understand the carnage that surrounds us. I ask for nothing of you other than to learn. The bodies are all around us and our plaintive cries for help go unanswered. We need to learn how to dial that phone. Because in the end it is but each other that we have to depend upon.

Listening to this child describe the horror that lay before her broke my heart. She could not comprehend the far reaching consequences of the crime her father had committed. In young Annie's case it is easy to understand why. But what then are our own reasons for not understanding the world we live in now? Are we choosing to ignore the loss of our freedoms? Perhaps, like Annie, when faced with such a horrific scene, we cannot cope with the idea of its death - rather we also choose to think of it as being in a deep slumber. Perhaps we think that our leaders, our government will soon 'wake up' and begin to care for us once again.

Shame on us for thinking so recklessly. We cannot point at a lack of age, experience, or wisdom and place blame. A lack of these are of our own doing. It is our civic responsibility to question our leaders. It is our responsibility to hold them accountable for their actions. We should not go to our homes at the end of a long hard work-filled day and feel victimized - especially by the very institutions that we helped build, finance, maintain, and support. So I ask you - how can you not draw similarities in the way our civil liberties are being taken away and the way Annie's innocence was?

I dunno about you but I could go for some ice-cream too right about now.

One of my favorite shows...

This is Season 5 Episode 6 entitled "My Missed Perception". A website that portrays how most American Asian men really feel: Bitter Asian Men. Now I rarely send an email to someone I don't already know but these two guys really compelled me to send in a "here! here!" letter. Is it a rant? Hell yes it is. And it's about damn time if you ask me. If you're an Asian dude like myself, give it a good read. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

And if you're a female, any race at all, give it a thorough once over yourself. Most disconcerting was her note of caution concerning recent political events and the overall stance of our government:

“I, said O’Connor, am against judicial reforms driven by nakedly partisan reasoning. Pointing to the experiences of developing countries and former communist countries where interference with an independent judiciary has allowed dictatorship to flourish, O’Connor said we must be ever-vigilant against those who would strongarm the judiciary into adopting their preferred policies. It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, she said, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings.”

Now consider the controversy regarding the pending NSA Bill which will make it a crime to report the President breaking the law.

Makes you wonder eh? An amazing thing happened today. Not the getting older part. But it snowed on my birthday! Read my tagline if you don't comprehend the amazing part of this statement.

This is Las Vegas... See?? First off, it doesn't snow here 'cept up in the mountains just north of us. And it definitely doesn't snow in March!

Since no one has offered any plausible explanation (aside from the meteorological conditions that existed which precipitated the snowfall) I will presume that it was an act of a greater power. Waddya' say.

Not much to report from the Vegas homefront. It was a typical day - filled with crime, mischief, bad guys, and the seedy underside of drama's overbloated belly. I won't tell you what I do for a living but I'll give you some clues: not a career criminal and not a cop.

Because I love all of you I will give you a stock tip. WYE on the New York Stock Exchange - the Wyeth Corporation. And to prove my insight I just checked the price and it went up a quarter today! Why, do you ask, should you invest your life savings into it? 'Cuz they make ADVIL!!!! And personally I couldn't live day to day without it. 'Nuff said I do believe. Emails were sent en masse last week. I guess you got yours! It seems people needed to know which day to call in sick for work. Apparently there is much to celebrate what with the first posting into my own online <strike>man-journal</strike> blog. Anyhoo, I write to you from the <strike>sleazy whore infested</strike> fine and cultured city of Las Vegas. Although fairly chilly today, I can sense the oncoming hellish heat of spring ensuing. Oh yes - I typed spring, not summer. We only have winter and summer here. What? Did you expect otherwise from our superficially terraformed desert? Mind you we do have four seasons here - but it's the hotel called Four Seasons located at 3960 S. Las Vegas Blvd. I highly recommend them by the way- fantastic views and masseuses that earn each and every $100 bill they earn on the half-hour.

So can anyone guess to what show I credit the name of my blog? Specifics please 'cuz that'll make me proud of you...
